Golden Ratio
A mathematical ratio of approximately 1.618 (Phi) that represents perfect structural proportion and is used to construct balanced curves in design.
The Golden Ratio (represented by the Greek letter $\Phi$, or approximately 1.618) is a mathematical proportion found repeatedly in nature, art, and classic architecture. In brand design, it is used to govern proportions and construct circular arcs that feel organic, dynamic, and optically balanced.
Applications in Logo Design
Designers construct a “Golden Grid” using Fibonacci sequence circles:
- Circle Sizes: Circles with diameters corresponding to the sequence: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, etc.
- Curve Snapping: Using sections of these concentric circles to draft custom brand symbols (e.g. the Apple logo or Twitter bird).
- Proportional Harmony: Defining the size of a brand symbol relative to the text using a 1:1.618 ratio to guarantee optical balance.
