Clear Space
The mandatory breathing room or safety zone surrounding a logo, kept free of text, images, or other graphic elements.
Clear space (also referred to as the safety zone or margins) is the designated area surrounding a logo that must remain empty of other typography, photography, borders, or layout margins. It protects the visual integrity and legibility of a mark by preventing clutter.
How Clear Space is Calculated
In premium identity guidelines, clear space is rarely defined in absolute measurements (like inches or pixels). Instead, it is expressed as a relative formula using a portion of the logo itself, known as the “X-Height.”
- Common Formula: The height or width of a specific letter inside the wordmark (such as the letter “X” or the main brand symbol) is defined as
X. - Application: A margin of
1Xor0.5Xis applied as an invisible buffer zone surrounding all four edges of the logo vector.
